Women's Basketball Falls to Cumberland
LEBANON, Tenn. - The Lindsey Wilson women's basketball team falls to Cumberland (Tenn.) 83-70 in the first part of their two game Tennessee road trip on Thursday evening at Dallas Floyd Phoenix Arena.
Lindsey Wilson (4-2, 0-2 MSC) drops their second straight conference matchup, while Cumberlands (4-1, 1-0 MSC) notches a win in their first taste of Mid-South Conference action. Lucy Patterson led Lindsey Wilson with 14 points as Maleigha Oldham and Sydnie Hall finished with 11 and 10, respectively, the only other Blue Raiders in double-digits.
Cumberlands asserted their dominance on the glass, outrebounding LWC 40-20. The Phoenix made their money in the paint, producing 50 of their 83 points in the lane while also shooting an impressive 94.4% from the stripe, punishing Lindsey Wilson for fouling.
The Blue Raiders came out firing, jumping out to a 21-9 lead in the opening seven minutes leading into the first media timeout. Lindsey Wilson would add to that lead, making it 23-12 at the end of the opening quarter.
Following the start of the second, Cumberland went on a 9-0 run four minutes in, broken up by a Hall layup. The Phoenix flipped the script in the second frame, outscoring Lindsey Wilson 26-9 and tying the game at 32-32 with 2:28 remaining in the half. A Kayla Gordon steal lead to a Lindsey Freeman layup, had Cumberland take their first lead of the contest. They would keep that lead as the buzzer sounded for the second half, pinning the game at 38-32 in favor of the Phoenix.
Cumberland started to pull away following the opening of the second half, Lindsey Wilson fell behind by as many as 15 points in the third quarter with just over a minute to play. The Phoenix dominated rebounding in the first three quarters, with a 29-15 total rebound disparity in favor of the Phoenix. Cumberland also dominated the box score, outscoring the Blue Raiders 50-26 in the second and third quarter.
The Blue Raiders would cut the lead to 80-70 with just over a minute to go in the fourth quarter but Cumberland stepped on the gas not allowing LWC to get within single digits. The mark was as close as the Blue Raiders got to regaining the lead.
The Phoenix ultimately won the contest 83-70 handing the Blue Raiders their second consecutive conference defeat.
Lindsey Wilson returns to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon, staying in Tennessee to take on Tennessee Southern at Curry Athletic Complex at 1 p.m. CT.
