Baseball splits with Campbellsville on Saturday
COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson baseball split a doubleheader today with Highway-55 rival Campbellsville (Ky.) at Egnew Park.
The visiting Tigers (6-7, 5-5 in the Mid-South Conference) won a 10-5 offensive battle in the opener, while Lindsey Wilson (9-12, 6-5) secured the split in a pitcher's duel win in the nightcap. The rubber game of the series is slated for Noon CT on Sunday at Egnew.
Game 1
Campbellsville scored nine times in the fifth through eighth innings to break an early 1-1 tie a sprint away with a 10-5 win.
Lindsey Wilson had its opportunities in the game but stranded 13 runners in its comeback effort to drop the opening game of the series.
Lucas Bault put the Blue Raiders in front with an RBI single in the second inning. Bault finished the opening game with three hits and two runs batted in.
The Tigers tied the game in the top of third and grabbed their first lead in the top of the fifth. Campbellsville would not trail again as the Tigers scored three runs in the sixth, three runs in the seventh, and two more in the eighth.
Trailing 5-1, Henry Paulino blasted his team-leading sixth home run of the season over the left-field wall to cut the deficit to 5-2. Paulino finished 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and an RBI.
After Campbellsville extended the lead to 8-2, the Blue Raiders second twice in the bottom of the seventh. Each Lindsey Wilson run came via bases-loaded walks, but ultimately the Blue Raiders left three stranded in the inning.
Bault provided another RBI hit in the ninth inning, but it was not enough in the loss.
Tyler Maskill joined Bault and Paulino with three hits in the game. The trio finished with nine of Lindsey Wilson's 11 hits.
Brady Cappe (4-2) suffered the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits in his six innings of work.
Game 2
Cohen Achen provided a gem on the bump in Lindsey Wilson's 2-1, seven-inning game-two win.
Making his first start of the season, Achen allowed just one run on five hits in a complete-game effort. He ended the game striking out a season-high six batters en route to improving to 2-0 on the season.
After falling behind 1-0, the Blue Raiders scored a pair of unconventional runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.
Nico Martinez plated Austin Rayno -- who provided a one-out single earlier in the inning -- with a fielder's choice. After Seth Price reached on a Campbellsville error, he ventured off first base forcing the Tiger defense into a throw to second. Martinez -- who was at third base -- sprinted for home producing an erratic Campbellsville throw that resulted in the second run of the inning.
That would be all the runs Achen would need.
Zach Bromstead suffered the hard-luck loss, allowing one earned run on two Lindsey Wilson hits. He struck out 11 over six innings, also hurling a complete game.
Lindsey Wilson returns to action at Noon CT on Sunday in the final game of the weekend series with Campbellsville at Egnew Park.
