Baseball Splits MSC Doubleheader Against Pikeville
PIKEVILLE, Ky. - The Lindsey Wilson baseball team split a Mid-South Conference doubleheader Saturday against Pikeville at Johnnie Lemaster Field.
The Blue Raiders (13-9, 5-5 MSC) took game one 2-0 and dropped game two to the Bears (9-15, 3-8 MSC).
Thorne Gray led the way for Lindsey Wilson with two hits and driving in both runs. Sam Gage also recorded two hits for the Blue Raiders in game one. Cohen Achen threw a complete-game allowing just one hit with one walk while striking out 11.
In game two, Gage went 4-for-5 while Chance Stayton recorded two hits and a home run. Andres Duran hit a three-run home run in the second game.
Game 1: Lindsey Wilson 2 Pikeville 0 (7 Innings)
Achen struck out the side in the first and then recorded a pair of strikeouts in both the second and third innings. Lindsey Wilson struck first in the fourth inning. Chance Stayton reached on a leadoff single. Following a groundout that advanced Stayton to second, Gray gave the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead with an RBI-double.
Achen continued to be dominant on the mound allowing just two total baserunners in the fourth and fifth while striking out three. Gage reached on a leadoff-single in the top of the sixth. Gray recorded his second RBI of the game with a single into centerfield that increased the Lindsey Wilson lead to 2-0. Achen retired the final six Bears batters as the Blue Raiders earned the 2-0 victory in game one.
Game 2: Pikeville 6 Lindsey Wilson 5
The Blue Raiders were unable to capitalize on an opportunity in the first inning. Following a groundout, Gage singled to left. Back-to-back walks loaded the bases before a double play ended the Lindsey Wilson threat. The Blue Raiders got on the board first in the fourth inning on a solo home run by Stayton.
In the bottom of the fourth, Pikeville had runners on first and third with two outs. Mason Malone then got a flyout to end the inning as the Bears stranded the runners. Jordan Blick led off the sixth with a double. Blick then advanced to third on an error by the pitcher and Gray was walked. Henry Paulino made it 2-0 with a sacrifice fly. Following a Jaden Cockerel single, Duran hit a three-run home run to increase the Blue Raiders lead to 5-0.
Tyler Freas reached second on an error with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Freas then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Samuel Torres got Pikeville on the scoreboard with an RBI-single into left field. Ryan Sartin made it a 5-2 game with a triple to right-center field. Tyler Maynard drove in Pikeville's third run of the inning. Malone then ended the inning with strikeout as the Blue Raider led 5-3 going into the eighth. The Bears scored two runs in the eighth inning to tie the game 5-5.
Lindsey Wilson got one hit in the top of the ninth but then a double play ended the inning. Maynard led off the bottom of the ninth with a single. Maynard then advanced to second following a strikeout. Greg Lile gave the Bears the 6-5 victory with a walk-off single into center field.
The two teams wrap up the series on Sunday at Johnnie Lemaster Field at Noon CT.
