2023 Women's Soccer Preview

COLUMBIA, Ky. - As the anticipation builds and the countdown to the new season begins, the Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer team is gearing up for what promises to be an exciting and challenging 2023 campaign. The Blue Raiders are poised to continue their legacy under the guidance of Coach Drew Burwash, who embarks on his 21st season at the helm.

The Blue Raiders demonstrated their prowess in the previous season with an overall record of 7-6-4, showing their competitive spirit both on the field and in the Mid-South conference where they clinched a remarkable 7-1-2 record. Their unwavering determination earned them a spot in the national tournament for the 22nd consecutive time, a testament to the team's consistency and skill. Although the season concluded with an opening-round exit, the Blue Raiders showcased their commitment to excellence.

Lindsey Wilson College bids farewell to some key contributors from last season. Top goal-scorer Rayssa De Souza, who netted 10 goals, has moved on, along with prominent assist leaders Britt Tonis and Emma Lindell, who collectively provided 12 assists. Their absence leaves space for fresh faces to step up and make their mark on the team's offensive strategy. Goalkeeper Gabby Duerson will have a lot to prove in net this season as she only played 2 games entering as a sub last year. Though it must be pointed out that she kept a clean sheet the 36 min she was in goal. Embarking on her Junior year, defender Maia Sapp will also have to assume more responsibilities and guide some newcomers. German midfielder, Alina Siegel, will look to keep her workrate from the previous season (1 goal and 2 assists in 7 starts) contributing both offensively and defensively.

Guiding the team into the new season is Silvia Marchesi, the current team captain. Marchesi, a seasoned defender, enters her Junior year with increased experience and a determination to lead her teammates both on and off the pitch. Her impressive tally of 5 goals and 2 assists from the previous season showcases her versatility and impact from the defensive end.

The Blue Raiders have a fiery start ahead, facing off against Oklahoma Wesleyan, the sixth-ranked team in the NAIA National Coaches Poll, in their season opener on August 26th in Jackson, Tennessee. With memories of a narrow 1-0 defeat from the previous year, Lindsey Wilson College will undoubtedly bring their A-game to this highly anticipated clash.

As the season progresses, the Blue Raiders are set to embark on intense battles against both familiar conference rivals and notable nationally-ranked opponents. Their first conference game on September 26th against Freed-Hardeman marks the beginning of their journey to assert their dominance in the Mid-South Conference. Throughout the season, they will also cross paths with ranked opponents such as William Carey (No. 5), Aquinas (No. 8), Indiana Wesleyan (No. 14), and Georgia Gwinnett (RV), setting the stage for thrilling encounters that will test their mettle.

With a blend of experienced players, emerging talents, and a dedicated coaching staff, the Lindsey Wilson College women's soccer team is ready to embrace the challenges of the 2023 season.
