COLUMBIA, Ky. – The Lindsey Wilson women's soccer team dropped a 3-2 contest to No. 5 ranked William Carey on Sunday at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
The Blue Raiders (1-2) got goals from Leonie Schmid and Alexandra Giusti. Alina Siegel recorded an assist while Gabby Duerson had six saves. William Carey outshot Lindsey Wilson 27-9 and held a 9-5 edge in shots on goal.
William Carey controlled much of the first half as they held and 15-5 edge in shots and had a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal in the first 45 minutes. Christina Salmon got the Crusaders on the board first in the 10th minute. The Blue Raiders did not record their first shot in the 35th minute and their first shot on goal in the 38th minute. The home side's best opportunity in the first half came in the final minutes. Lindsey Wilson had three shots with two on goal in the final two minutes but were unable to score.
The Blue Raiders carried that momentum from the end of the first half into the beginning of the second as they were finally able to get the equalizer. Schmid got a rebound goal in the 46th minute to tie it at 1-1. William Carey re-took the lead in the 49th minute when Maria Azarias got a ball from Salmon and beat the Blue Raider goalkeeper. Siegel had a free kick from just past midfield, the ball went between two Crusader defenders where Giusti was and she fired past the keeper to tie the game 2-2 in the 58th minute. William Carey got the go-ahead goal in the 68th minute when Mariangela Jimenez cross the ball to Julia Herbst for the goal.
Lindsey Wilson is back in action on Saturday when they host Aquinas (Mich.) at 7 p.m. CT at Walter S. Reuling Stadium.
