Softball Evens Record with Sweep of Asbury

WILMORE, Ky. – At Asbury Softball Field, the Lindsey Wilson softball team outscored the homestanding Eagles 13-6 en route to its first sweep of the 2023 season.

Junior Kelsie Bostock turned in an outstanding afternoon at the plate with three extra-base hits, including her first-career home run, and Amanda Schick produced a day-high three runs batted in.

Game One | Lindsey Wilson 5, Asbury 1

Savannah Robbins fired a complete-game five-hitter to improve her overall record to 2-0 and help the Blue Raiders to their first win of the day. In her first-career start, the freshman surrendered just one earned run and retired two Asbury batters on strikes.

On offense, the visitors worked around three scoreless innings before striking in the top half of the fourth frame. With Cheyenne Sandoval stationed at first off an infield miscue, Bostock strolled to the plate in search of her first hit of the year, and she got just that. On the first pitch she saw, the third-year Blue Raider launched a two-run blast over the outfield fence, giving Lindsey Wilson the only lead it would need.

Following an empty fifth inning, Schick led off the top of the sixth with a moon shot of her own, touching them all for the first time in her collegiate career to extend the Blue Raiders' lead to 3-0.

Asbury ended the shutout bid with a run crossed in the subsequent half-inning, but the locals effectively sealed the deal in their final plate appearance thanks to another infield error off the bat of Schick that allowed Desiree Chang and Brooklyn Becker to score.

Despite the Eagles continuing to threaten in the bottom leg of the seventh, the Blue Raider defense got the benefit of a clutch double play and a flyout to finish the game.

Game Two | Lindsey Wilson 8, Asbury 5

The Eagles doubled Lindsey Wilson in total hits in game two, 12-6. However, the Blue Raiders scored runs on four of those hits, including their first hit of the game in the second inning.

After a lead-off pop-out, Elizabeth Funk stepped into the box and proceeded to obliterate the ball out of the park for just her third-ever home run and first since 2021. The solo shot was followed by a double from Bostock and a walk to Kendall Dailey. The newest baserunners for the locals were swiftly sent home on a double by Za'Kiya Sizemore soon after, bringing the advantage for Lindsey Wilson up to 3-0.

Then, in the third frame, the locals shook off a run by the Eagles in the previous half-inning by getting back off the bat of Funk. While this time was not a home run, it still plated a single run for the Raiders to restore their three-run lead.

The next inning saw Lindsey Wilson tack on another pair to its cushion, as Alexis Garayzar recorded her first RBIs of the day with a single into the grass, bringing across Sizemore and Dailey.

Asbury stayed within striking distance through the final inning, trimming its deficit down to 6-3 heading into the seventh, but a two-run RBI-single by Dailey with one out on the scorecard drilled the nail the coffin.

Olivia Franceschi got the start in the circle for Lindsey Wilson and picked up the win in the process. Meanwhile, Kaylee Covey made her first appearance of the season and struck out five over six innings of work to collect the save.

Lindsey Wilson returns home on Friday afternoon to host Missouri Baptist University in another non-conference doubleheader. The first pitch from Marilyn D. Sparks Park is slated to be thrown at 2 p.m. CST.
